Aims & History

      Bringing Harmony to North Staffordshire

Introduction Up One Level

THE CHOIR was formed way back in 1993. It started with a base of some dozen singers separating from another local choir, and a completely new Director of Music - Mrs. Margaret Ward - who, God bless her, had never done any conducting before, but was prepared to take us under her wing and learn her trade alongside us. This she has done most successfully!

WE WERE also very lucky to bring with us from the previous choir our Accompanist, Mrs. Janet Downing, and her help since the foundation has been invaluable. Both ladies give us staunch support at all times of the year, and are happy to join in the fellowship shared amongst the Choir.

THE GENERAL AIMS of the Choir are to enjoy ourselves in singing, and hopefully to give entertainment and pleasure to our listeners. Thus far, we have maintained a fairly low profile locally, but with the dawn of the New Millennium, we felt  confident enough to tackle our more adventurous ambitions.

HENCE IN YEAR 2000, we participated in two or three combined choir concerts with "Luton MVC", performing in the London area. The first of these took place at the Grosvenor House Hotel in Park Lane London, where we sang to some 1,000 delegates to a weekend conference. The second of these Luton-cooperative concerts took place in Hampton Court, which was interesting, to a party of Americans. There was also a combined weekend singing tuition arranged at Eastbourne, which members enjoyed.

EARLIER IN THE Millennium year we took part in a concert in Manchester at the Manchester Evening News Arena hall, where we joined with 1750 other choristers from more than 50 choirs based all over the country, singing with the Manchester Camerata orchestra, guest artist Nigel Ogsden of the BBC on the organ, and Marie McLaughlin from the Royal Opera House in London. Certainly a day to remember.

WE HAVE ALSO made a trip to Mittertich in Germany in a village exchange with Cheddleton. (see Special Events)
